OUR THESIS: Through insightful content, robust support systems, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of ideas, 1821 champions the essential role that Black and Brown-led startups play in driving innovation, social advancement, and economic development.

OUR MISSION: We are building a global Black and Brown founder community that spans industries and generations, championing individual empowerment, innovation, and inclusivity.

OUR NAME. We honor the trailblazing inventor Thomas Jennings (1791 - 1859), the first African American to be granted a patent in 1821. “He was a founding member of many early philanthropic rights organizations such as the Wilberforce Society, the New York African Society for Mutual Relief, the Phoenix Society, the New York Vigilance Committee, and the Legal Rights Association.”
